Nearly 70% of U.S. employees have either returned to work for a previous employer or are open to being a “boomerang” employee at some point in the future. In our last blog post, we discussed why companies should embrace boomerangs – employees who leave a company voluntarily only to be rehired. This week, we’ll cover some of the strategies you can use to catch those boomerangs – and keep them. Let’s get started.

Keep a database of people who leave in good standing. Similar to your Talent Network, place exiting employees’ contact information in a database for ongoing sharing of company news and new opportunities. You already have this information; use it to maintain the communication channel and demonstrate that your former employee’s contribution was valued.

So you’ve downloaded our 2017 Calendar of Healthcare Conferences and Events or you’ve made plans to hold your own event in the near future. The team at NAS has plenty of experience helping clients prepare for, promote and participate in job fairs and hiring events. We asked them to provide their ideas on how to draw the crowds to your booth and what to give away, as well as their simple advice for a successful day. Here’s what they said:

Out-of-the-box ways to draw people to your booth

Sean Bain: At a college event, one company had an old-fashioned photo booth: the ones that spit out the four small images. They asked students to put on company logo shirts, as if they were already employed, and pose for photos.

Nancy Caputo: One hospital brought a photographer to their booth so that attendees could get a professional profile shot for use on LinkedIn and other platforms. The company was able to have a conversation with them while this was taking place.

There were many new companies in attendance at this year’s conference. In fact, I probably only recognized two thirds of the brands on the exhibit floor. HealthSouth is one of the nation’s largest providers of post-acute healthcare, offering both facility- and home-based post-acute services in 34 states and Puerto Rico through its network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, home health agencies and hospices.   

If anyone has firsthand experience recruiting for multiple locations, it would certainly be William Poynter, vice president of talent acquisition for HealthSouth Corporation. William began working for HealthSouth in 2009 in the role of director of talent acquisition. His recruitment experience dates back to 1990, and he has specialized in healthcare recruiting for 12 years.

What are your overall recruitment challenges?

Our recruitment objectives vary, but healthcare recruiting, in general, is challenging. The most demanding aspect is recruiting the volume of healthcare professionals in nursing and therapy. We use all tools available to us to reach that population.
